  • Throughout the year, we will be exploring ancient art as well as modern and contemporary art from around the world. Below are some of the projects and themes we will be exploring for each grade level.

    Kindergarten. We will be focusing on the elements of art. These include color, line, shape, texture, and space. Our unit themes include Dinosaurs, Food, Minnesota Birds, Minnesota Mammals and Habitats, Imaginary Creatures, Emotions, Transportation, Maps, Minnesota Winters, in addition to units on Modern and Contemporary Artists.  We will explore these themes through painting, drawing, clay sculpture, recycled material sculpture, collage and printmaking.

    1st Grade. We will be focusing on the elements of art. These include color, line, shape, texture, and space. Our unit themes include Line Study Sculpture, Fall Leaves and Colors, Self-portrait and Textile Designs from around the world, Vejigante Puerto Rican Mask Making, Seascapes and Water Transportation, Wood Sculpture, Textures and Clay Animals.

    2nd Grade and E1. We will be focusing on the elements of art. These include color, line, shape, texture, and space. Our units include Geometric and Symmetrical Shapes, Watercolor Cityscapes, Asian Shadow Puppets and Performance, Superheroes and Imaginary Creatures, Ceramics: Clay Bells, Extinct Animal Printmaking, Poster Design and Healthy Eating.

    3rd Grade. We will be focusing on the elements of art. These include color, line, shape, texture, and space. We will also be focusing on the principles of art including repetition, pattern, emphasis, unity, contrast and balance.  Our units include Insects, Self-portrait Collage, Cubist Sculpture, Ancient Cave Art, Weaving, Ceramics: Mexican and Peruvian Ocarinas, Drawing and Painting from Observation: Outside in Nature.

    4th Grade and E2. We will be focusing on the elements of art. These include color, line, shape, texture, and space. We will also be focusing on the principles of art including repetition, pattern, emphasis, unity, contrast and balance. Our units include Sketchbook Making, 3-D Shapes and Invented Characters, Tints and Shades Cityscapes, Transportation Design Sculpture, Drawing from Observation, Printmaking: Motion and Movement, Ceramics: Coil Pots, Surrealist Self-portraits, Chinese and Japanese Ink Painting, Board Game Design.

    5th Grade. We will be focusing on the elements of art. These include color, line, shape, texture, and space. We will also be focusing on the principles of art including repetition, pattern, emphasis, unity, contrast and balance. Our units include Sketchbook Making, Contour Drawing, Tints and Shades Self-portrait Paintings, Found Object Sculpture, Pop-Art Icon Prints and Paper Mache Pop Art Sculpture, Contemporary Pottery: Jonathan Adler inspired vessel, Digital Art and Deconstructing Advertising, Public Art vs. Street Art, Collaborative Playground Design Sculpture.
